Lesson 1:  The Road to War (Nationalism)

 

 

We will complete this assignment in class on Tuesday 8/19.

 
1)  Working together in your small group, research the meaning of nationalism.  Come up with a working defintion that you can all agree on. Write this definition on the back of the handout.   Discuss the following ideas:  Is nationalism a positive or negative force? (Make a T-Chart listing examples of both)  Do we, as americans, display any nationalistic tendencies?  If so, how? (Make a list)  Are there currently any countries that are known for promoting, or maybe even over-promoting, a sense of nationalism? (Make a list)

3)  In your small group, discuss the following:
 
What Would You Do?
Your nation is one of the oldest, wealthiest and most populous in the world. Your Science and tech. industries are the best in the world. But you are surrounded by weaker countries that build up their navies to threaten your colonies and steal your resources.  They also want to take some of your territory.  You fear they are growing  stronger at your expense and eventually they might try to take over your homeland. You might lose your home and cultural heritage forever.
 
What will you do? Why? 
 
Would you go to war?  Why or why not? 
 
At the time of WWI, what country do you think this might have represented?
 
 
4)  As a group, review the following primary source documents (propaganda posters from WWI)

Please complete your table on the major players of World War I.  You will be sharing this with your reserach group, so be as complete and thorough as you can.  The other members of your group are counting on you to conduct sound research!! 

When you have completed the work on your document, please upload the document under the World History section of Schoology.

Your task:

Type all your answers in the attached packet. Please use the links provided and your textbook to answer the following questions and complete the activities.  When you are done, please upload the completed packet here.  You will have classtime on Monday and Tuesday (8/25 and 8/26).  Completed packets are due no later than Tuesday 9/2.

Lesson 5:  Political Cartoons

We will start this assignment on Tuesday (8/26) in class,

Look at 2 of the Political Cartoons and respond to the following questions:
*What does the cartoon depict?*Who is represented in the cartoon?*How does the cartoon relate to World War I and what we've learned?*What does the author imply?
 
Complete this assignment in a WORD doc.  Please paste the cartoons onto the page.  When you are done, please submit this assignment on Schoology.

 

ABOVE & BEYOND: Create your own WWI political cartoon.  Make it relevant to the era.  Even the artwork had a specific feel.  See how authentic you can be with this!
